When two hot hitting teams face off against one another against average starting pitching, the total will not go above 12 (-145) in most instances. Likewise, when two cold hitting teams play against two dominant starters, the total will not drop below 6.5 while laying no more than (-145). However, if a Top 10 pitcher on a winning team faces a struggling team and pitcher you may have to lay -300 to win $100.

Capping totals involves many components:

1) We start be reviewing who the home plate umpire will be. If this is the first game of a series, this information will usually not be available until an hour before game time. The umpires follow a rotation with the first base umpire behind the plate the next night. Pay attention to the umpires over/under record in their games called and the percentage of strikes that they call. Once again, a higher percentage of strikes will more than likely produce Unders as the wider strike zone favors the pitchers. A lower percentage of called strikes will favor the batters as they will more than likely be facing hitters counts where the pitcher will have to throw a strike.

2) Look at each teams over/under record in their last 10 games. Also note any current streaks. Ideally, you want to jump on a team at the beginning of a streak. A solid hitting team like the Yankees, if their bats have been quiet the last few games, a break out is more than likely looming. Conversely, a light hitting team like the Expos recent string of overs might be nearing an end. When looking at each teams over/under streak, note if it is solid hitting or shaky pitching producing overs or weak hitting and excellent pitching ringing up Unders. Also look at how each teams batting average and runs scored fares against lefties or righties depending on the starting pitcher.

3) Review each teams starting pitchers combined over/under record on the season and in their last 3 games. Pay attention to the combined pitchers WHIP (walks and hits per 9 innings). Note any trends such as an average pitcher with a propensity towards overs that has been pitching better of late as noted by his recent string of unders and drop in WHIP.

4) Look at the bullpens. Have they seen extensive action over the last few days? Are they over or under performing in recent games as compared to their season history? Are any pitchers in the pen unavailable from too much work the previous night?

When you combine the following factors, it should be fairly obvious which way to go with the Over/Under. Do not force action. Only play those games that have the highest probability of going Over or Under the total based on your researched facts.

My Baseball Story

I love this game. It has been half a century since I started to fall in love with baseball. The romance is still going strong. Playing, coaching, watching, listening, and reading about baseball has been part of my every day life since I was 15 years old. Even in the dead of winter when baseball is on the back pages of the newspaper, I will find out what new development has occurred or who has been signed or traded.

I want to write and read about all types of baseball stories that are inspiring. Why not? Isn’t being inspired a great way to live? Isn’t offering others an expression of what you love the ultimate gift?

I discovered my need to write and gather inspiring stories about baseball as I drove on Route 80 in Northern New Jersey in February 2004. I started thinking about the movies I have seen and the stories I have read that I loved. Why did I like these stories? What was “My” definition of a great story? I was fixed on finding an answer. I started thinking about the movie Field of Dreams, one of my all time favorites. Why did I like this corny
movie so much? Was Field of Dreams a metaphor for living out of your field of dreams? Was creating a clearing done to allow the dreams to show up? In the movie they cleared away a crop of corn to build a baseball field. Do we need to clear away some of our own corn fields to see the dreams that capture our hearts and then create a path to reach those
dreams?

It was then I decided to open up a new road for myself. The direction I was meant to travel on. I love baseball. Oh I said that. I love great stories. I said that as well. Let me fuse these two passions, together. “Sounds good,” I said to myself. I guess I am pretty corny, huh. That is the birth of baseball’s pride and joy. The company I started that is dedicated to expressing inspiring baseball stories. Talk about a labor of love. This baby has been living inside me for over 30 years.

What could be better than finding your love and then nurturing it? I have discovered my essence. When I write these words, I see that I am on the field where I want to play.

Now, I can provide a place for others to tell their tale of baseball inspiration. Tell your Field of Dreams or be like The Natural even if you are The Rookie. Make your story sing. Make it vibrant.

It was the middle of the NFL playoffs, and what has grabbed the interest of many sports fans has been the off-season maneuvering and acquisitions of the Mets and Yankees. In the past, the sports media has hyped baseball trades, the big money contracts, and the long time rivalries which make the off-season so interesting, but never as intensely as this year in NY. First, Pedro Martinez, then, Carlos Beltran going to the Mets has splashed the team front and center in our sports world consciousness. For the first time, in a long time, the Mets have captured the imagination of their fans with the possibilities of a dynamic exciting season.

Anyone who knows me knows I love the Yankees. And yes, I admit scoffing at the Mets in recent seasons. Some may wonder how a Yankee fan feels about the increasing powerful competition across town.

Like many true Yankees fans, I NEVER wanted to see Pedro Martinez in pinstripes.
(Hey, I also was never a Roger Clemmens aficionado).
I have witnessed many sworn enemies extend the olive branch during my lifetime. Ive seen Berlin Wall come down, Communism fail, and normal trade with China. Ive accepted that Darth Vader was once a good guy, and Tom Cruise can play a bad guy,
But all that doesnt mean I could want Pedro Martinez playing for my team. So thanks Mr. Steinbrenner, for not making that deal. However, I do know Pedro is a terrific pitcher, so why not have him winning for a NY team, in another league.thats perfect!

Carlos Beltran is another matter. Yeah, it would be great to see him in a Yankee line-up.
I could see him patrolling the Stadium outfield. Like a spoiled child who has been given exorbitant gifts throughout her lifetime, I expected George to make a last minute move and deliver yet another treasure. Instead, he offered up a different prize: Randy Johnson. I admit that I secretly hoped for both players and was slightly disappointed. In spite of this, Im very happy he went to the Mets.

Why? Because the ultimate thrill for a NY sports fan (no matter if you love baseball or not) is to have another Subway Series. Its our Mecca, our Earthly Paradise, and Nirvana all rolled into one. It eclipses The Superbowl, has us more excited than the NBA playoffs, US Open and Master combined. NASCAR is nothing when were talking Subway Series.

So if getting Beltran, pitching Pedro, and grabbing some headlines in the process are the beginnings of making that dream come true, then bring it on. Yankee fans are ready.

Times are different then when I grew up, and I have found that attention spans are short and patience is thin so you need these coaching baseball tips to find ways to keep practices interesting and competitive.

1. Have a preseason parents meeting. This should be mandatory for every team. More problems can be eliminated than you can imagine, if you plan this meeting right. Spell out your coaching philosophy, and parental behavior at games. Playing time is the #1 parental complaint. Deal with this up front at this meeting and you will avoid problems during the season.

Enlist your assistant coaches and find a couple of scorekeepers.

Inform them of the importance of punctuality in bring their kids to practice and picking them up after. Otherwise you will spend half your practice waiting for players to arrive, and spend your dinner hour waiting for them to be picked up.

The parents meeting is #1 of all my coaching baseball tips.

2. Find assistant coaches. You can never have to much help when coaching baseball. If you cant find qualified coaches enlist the help of parents to help you run drill stations and handle administrative details like uniforms and scorekeeping.

3. Emphasize the fundamentals. The proper mechanics for throwing and hitting are seldom emphasized enough. Injuries occur when children use poor mechanics. Teach proper warm ups and insist they are performed before practice begins.

4. Have a plan and work your plan. If you are serious about coaching baseball take the time to develop a practice plan based on the skills you need to teach. Pick out the fundamental skill sets appropriate to your age group and practice drill and practice again.

5. Spend 30%-40% of every practice on pitching. This is why you need assistants. Someone should spend this much time at every practice with your pitchers. This does not mean they pitch all of this time, they can work on mechanics and drills like balance drills, and towel drills. If the players can lead off at your age group, you would also include holding runners on and fielding bunts. Players should throw batting practice once they can throw strikes on a regular basis.

6. Teach every player how to bunt. Bunting is a lost art that needs to be revived. For the player who struggles to hit bunting can be a confidence booster and run producer.

7. Teach defensive movement. This is nothing more than having every player moving when the pitcher reaches the top of his windup. Nobody is standing flat footed. This also means that on EVERY hit ball, every player has a place to move to. If they are not catching or throwing the ball they must be moving to a backup position. Statues dont play baseball nobody is standing and watching the play.

8.Emphasize aggressive base running. Run out every hit ball regardless of where its hit to. Come out of the batters box as if you are going for a triple, even if its a routine grounder or fly ball. Break on every pitch as if you are going to steal even when your not. A runner in motion puts pressure on a defense. They move out of position to cover the runner and base hits squeak though. Pitchers rush their motions when a runner breaks and lose their concentration. I believe in pressure, pressure, pressure when it comes to base running.

9.Praise in public and criticize in private. Remember these are kids we are coaching not adults. If you need to get on a player pull him aside privately and speak with him. On the other hand if you have something good to say share it with the whole team.

10.Its about the kids Emphasize sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and persistence. Winning will take care of itself. Your job (should you choose to accept it.) is to help the players learn the game, enjoy themselves, and advance to the next level of the game.

5. Spend 30%-40% of every practice on pitching. This is why you need assistants. Someone should spend this much time at every practice with your pitchers. This does not mean they pitch all of this time, they can work on mechanics and drills like balance drills, and towel drills. If the players can lead off at your age group, you would also include holding runners on and fielding bunts. Players should throw batting practice once they can throw strikes on a regular basis.

6. Teach every player how to bunt. Bunting is a lost art that needs to be revived. For the player who struggles to hit bunting can be a confidence booster and run producer.

7. Teach defensive movement. This is nothing more than having every player moving when the pitcher reaches the top of his windup. Nobody is standing flat footed. This also means that on EVERY hit ball, every player has a place to move to. If they are not catching or throwing the ball they must be moving to a backup position. Statues dont play baseball nobody is standing and watching the play.

8.Emphasize aggressive base running. Run out every hit ball regardless of where its hit to. Come out of the batters box as if you are going for a triple, even if its a routine grounder or fly ball. Break on every pitch as if you are going to steal even when your not. A runner in motion puts pressure on a defense. They move out of position to cover the runner and base hits squeak though. Pitchers rush their motions when a runner breaks and lose their concentration. I believe in pressure, pressure, pressure when it comes to base running.

9.Praise in public and criticize in private. Remember these are kids we are coaching not adults. If you need to get on a player pull him aside privately and speak with him. On the other hand if you have something good to say share it with the whole team.

10.Its about the kids Emphasize sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and persistence. Winning will take care of itself. Your job (should you choose to accept it.) is to help the players learn the game, enjoy themselves, and advance to the next level of the game.

My Baseball Story

I love this game. It has been half a century since I started to fall in love with baseball. The romance is still going strong. Playing, coaching, watching, listening, and reading about baseball has been part of my every day life since I was 15 years old. Even in the dead of winter when baseball is on the back pages of the newspaper, I will find out what new development has occurred or who has been signed or traded.

I want to write and read about all types of baseball stories that are inspiring. Why not? Isn’t being inspired a great way to live? Isn’t offering others an expression of what you love the ultimate gift?

I discovered my need to write and gather inspiring stories about baseball as I drove on Route 80 in Northern New Jersey in February 2004. I started thinking about the movies I have seen and the stories I have read that I loved. Why did I like these stories? What was “My” definition of a great story? I was fixed on finding an answer. I started thinking about the movie Field of Dreams, one of my all time favorites. Why did I like this corny
movie so much? Was Field of Dreams a metaphor for living out of your field of dreams? Was creating a clearing done to allow the dreams to show up? In the movie they cleared away a crop of corn to build a baseball field. Do we need to clear away some of our own corn fields to see the dreams that capture our hearts and then create a path to reach those
dreams?

It was then I decided to open up a new road for myself. The direction I was meant to travel on. I love baseball. Oh I said that. I love great stories. I said that as well. Let me fuse these two passions, together. “Sounds good,” I said to myself. I guess I am pretty corny, huh. That is the birth of baseball’s pride and joy. The company I started that is dedicated to expressing inspiring baseball stories. Talk about a labor of love. This baby has been living inside me for over 30 years.

What could be better than finding your love and then nurturing it? I have discovered my essence. When I write these words, I see that I am on the field where I want to play.

Now, I can provide a place for others to tell their tale of baseball inspiration. Tell your Field of Dreams or be like The Natural even if you are The Rookie. Make your story sing. Make it vibrant.

It was the middle of the NFL playoffs, and what has grabbed the interest of many sports fans has been the off-season maneuvering and acquisitions of the Mets and Yankees. In the past, the sports media has hyped baseball trades, the big money contracts, and the long time rivalries which make the off-season so interesting, but never as intensely as this year in NY. First, Pedro Martinez, then, Carlos Beltran going to the Mets has splashed the team front and center in our sports world consciousness. For the first time, in a long time, the Mets have captured the imagination of their fans with the possibilities of a dynamic exciting season.

Anyone who knows me knows I love the Yankees. And yes, I admit scoffing at the Mets in recent seasons. Some may wonder how a Yankee fan feels about the increasing powerful competition across town.

Like many true Yankees fans, I NEVER wanted to see Pedro Martinez in pinstripes.
(Hey, I also was never a Roger Clemmens aficionado).
I have witnessed many sworn enemies extend the olive branch during my lifetime. Ive seen Berlin Wall come down, Communism fail, and normal trade with China. Ive accepted that Darth Vader was once a good guy, and Tom Cruise can play a bad guy,
But all that doesnt mean I could want Pedro Martinez playing for my team. So thanks Mr. Steinbrenner, for not making that deal. However, I do know Pedro is a terrific pitcher, so why not have him winning for a NY team, in another league.thats perfect!

Carlos Beltran is another matter. Yeah, it would be great to see him in a Yankee line-up.
I could see him patrolling the Stadium outfield. Like a spoiled child who has been given exorbitant gifts throughout her lifetime, I expected George to make a last minute move and deliver yet another treasure. Instead, he offered up a different prize: Randy Johnson. I admit that I secretly hoped for both players and was slightly disappointed. In spite of this, Im very happy he went to the Mets.

Why? Because the ultimate thrill for a NY sports fan (no matter if you love baseball or not) is to have another Subway Series. Its our Mecca, our Earthly Paradise, and Nirvana all rolled into one. It eclipses The Superbowl, has us more excited than the NBA playoffs, US Open and Master combined. NASCAR is nothing when were talking Subway Series.

So if getting Beltran, pitching Pedro, and grabbing some headlines in the process are the beginnings of making that dream come true, then bring it on. Yankee fans are ready.
